Go the Distance
Parker and I always texted. We wanted to stay in contact with each other. It was afterschool one day when we were texting. I had just had a horrible day. School was rough and I was just not feeling my best. When Parker and I were texting, I tried to sound fine. I tried to act like nothing was wrong. I told him my mom was working late because of Parent-Teacher Conferences and that I was just tired. He somehow figure out that I was not fine. He had a pretty typical texting response time of a least within 5 minutes, Yet, that day he took extremely long to reply. In one hour he only replied 3 times, which is weird for him. After waiting about 20 minutes for him to reply, my doorbell rang. Wearing sweatpants, my hair looking a mess, and a cup of coffee in my hand, I answered the door. There stood Parker with a bag of smarties and a smile on his face. Now this was before either of us had cars, so he had set his bike against the garage. To put this in perspective, he and I live on separate sides of town. Yes, a bike trial links our sides of town but it is 8 miles. 8 hilly miles. It takes about 45 minutes to bike. He biked all the way across town for me. "Parker? What are you doing here?" I was surprised and I totally looked like shit. "I could tell you were upset and I wanted to make you happier." I yelled at him about biking all the way across town for me because I felt like he shouldn't have gone through that trouble. "If you really care about someone, you have to do whatever it takes to make them happy." In all honesty, I was so beyond happy to see him. He instantly made me a little happier. We sat outside against my garage and talked. He had his arm around me and I just leaned into him. I would open a smartie and eat one, feed him one, eat one, and feed him one. The fact that he went to such great lengths to make sure I was okay, made my day absolutely better.
Going to such distances, makes a relationships stronger. Its important to show the other person you are willing to do whatever it takes. In my instant, biking across town with my favorite candy to make sure I would have a better day.
